The urgent mission of the Foundation Fighting Blindness, Inc. (FFB) is to drive the research that will provide preventions, treatments and cures for people affected by retinitis pigmentosa, macular degeneration, Usher syndrome, and the entire spectrum of retinal degenerative diseases. Over 10 million Americans of every age and race are affected by these devastating diseases.
Foundation-funded researchers are developing promising treatments for these retinal diseases including: gene therapy, retinal cell transplantation, pharmaceutical and nutritional therapies, and retinal prosthetic devices. The continued support of FFB has brought some of these groundbreaking therapies forward to human clinical trials and more are scheduled to start in the near future. Effective and lasting treatments and cures for those affected by retinal degenerative diseases are now on the horizon. Since its inception in 1971, FFB has funded thousands of studies at hundreds of prominent institutions around the world.
