Charitable Giving

Curator's Note

We all know that giving helps others but studies have shown that it can actually boost your physical and mental health. In fact, studies have reported lower blood pressure, reduced stress levels and a surge in our feel-good neurotransmitters when we give of ourselves to others. I guess there’s some scientific proof behind “the joy of giving."

Details

WfWI’s yearlong program teaches women their economic, social, and civic rights and builds their knowledge and skills. This, combined with greater access to resources, enables women to gain stability and self-sufficiency, and to become leaders of change in their homes and communities. Our program incorporates two key elements: life-skills and income generation. Participants receive life-skills training in health awareness, decision-making, negotiation, and civic participation. Women also learn business and vocational skills and gain access to income-generating activities, so that they can move towards economic self-sufficiency. Each program participant receives $10 per month as a training stipend. The training stipend eases the immediate financial pressure on participants, enabling them to cover basic necessities. In some countries, the money goes further and is used to purchase land, buy materials for a business, or build savings. When possible, the training stipend is delivered through banks or microcredit institutions, giving women a banking history and potential access to credit.
